A New Local Home at the Depot

It took a village but we have moved the Honest Farm ‘Pure Kentucky’ Market to 128 Main Street in Midway, location of the former Depot restaurant (across the street from The Black Tulip and Quirk Cafe). We could not have done this without the help of so many wonderful customers and friends.

Some I really want to thank are Blair West and Betsey Hagan (who continue to help on a daily basis at the store and farm), Alfred and Hurst Nuckols, John McDaniel, Bob and Mary West, Dan and Adele Roller, Wilda and Rick Caudle, Jaspal and Thad, Linda Nelson, Mary Jane McGaughey, Kit Walden, Mary and Tom Sayre, Tim Klarer, and many others who lent their moral support.

We’ll be serving our deli foods – and a few more new items – once we get the stamp of approval from the local heath department early next week. So come by for one of our Bacon, Lettuce and Local Tomato sandwiches and Cowboy Cookies.

Also on tap next week… A photographer from Southern Living magazine will be at the store and on the farm photographing on Friday and Saturday. They will be at the farm stand (now located in front of the store) early Saturday for our first customers so I hope you will come and see the action and tell them all about Midway. Canine and child props are favorite photography subjects, by the way!

I wanted to share with you some info on plastic bags and why they’ve earned an environmentally ‘evil’ reputation (and deservedly so). We’re really amazed at all the customers who now bring their own totes and bags. There is so much packaging involved with produce (all those little produce bags), not to mention all the boxes we use for transport and for wholesale sales. We re-use all our produce boxes and compost and recycle all that we can. In addition I return empty boxes to other farmers to keep the cycle moving.

Here’s a link to a site with all the reasons why we need to reduce our use of plastic bags:

If you stop by Whole Foods Market (formerly Wild Oats) check out our produce for sale there.

Our store hours (they may be extended in the future) are 10 am to 6 pm Wednesday - Friday. 9 am to 5 pm Saturdays. We’re open until 6:30 pm on Thursdays for CSA pickups.

This weekend stop by for some wonderful local summer produce! We have….

The first corn! This comes from Gallrein Farm in Shelbyville and is super sweet and a real treat.
Big Beefsteak Tomatoes, Half Runner beans, Jade stringless beans
Red Pontiac and Kennebec potatoes, Candy onions
Kale and Collard Greens
Slicing and pickling cucumbers
Zucchini and Summer squashes
Red, Golden and Striped beets
Basil, dill, oregano, mint, and other fresh herbs
Local cantaloupe (wow, is it good)
and freestone peaches (from Georgia)
